Gardner iIlustrates eight brief poems by Ian Hamilton Finlay (3), Stuart Mills (2), and Simon Cutts (3) with abstract colored designs on facing pages. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

The short texts concern Robespierre and his dog Brount. The photographic illustrations are of Brount's dish, with his name inscribed on it, in various interior and garden settings. The Brount ceramic dish was made by David Ballentyne, -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

This booklet is cited in two places because the first author listed is Cutts but it is listed in the Finlay bibliography. Straiks" or "strakes" are stripes of different color from the rest of the surface of which they form a part (OED). The child-like illustrations reproduced in this booklet are by Finlay's son. Although the title of this booklet, "The Axis," appears on the title page as such, the cover is printed with the title, "The Uris."
